http://my.webmd.com/content/article/46/2731_1666 High protein, low carbohydrate diets have been widely promoted in recent years as an effective approach to losing weight. These diets generally recommend dieters receive 30% to 50% of their total calories from protein. By comparison, the American Heart Association, the National Cholesterol Education Program and the American Cancer Society all recommend a diet in which only 10% to 15% of calories are derived from protein (nutrients essential to the building, maintenance and repair of tissues in the body). The Atkins diet is an example of a high protein, low carbohydrate diet. How Do These Diets Work? By restricting carbohydrates drastically to a mere fraction of that found in the typical American diet, the body goes into a different _meta_bolic state called ketosis, whereby it burns its own fat for fuel. Normally the body burns carbohydrates for fuel

Old old old.  Assumptions vs science.  Keep up! According to everything I have read and been told a low carb high protein diet is harder on your liver.  Balance. AG

Can you post a reference?  Everything that I can find says that a _high protein diet_ is not good for people with liver disease, but is safe for people without liver disease. But we weren't talking about people with HCV being on a high-protein diet.  The question is: is a balanced diet that includes red meat safe and healthy for people in general, and with people with HCV?  I'd be interested to see something that says that it isn't.

I realize you were discussing diet in general but I just figured I would interject the diets impact on the liver.  I imagine I could find something that says red meat isn't healthy just like I could find something that says it is.  It's an age old debate and not one I want to engage in. Like I said, just bringing up the fact that the Atkins approach isn't a good one if you have HCV. AG

Do you know what the Atkins approach is?  I don't think so, otherwise you wouldn't make a blanket statement like this.
