I have just discovered this newsgroup. I was recently diagnosed with UC after years of pain and discomfort. I am currently on asacol (3 tabs a day). I don't think it's making much of a difference but I 've only been on it for about 6 weeks. I have good and bad days and try to cope as much as I can but I get really depressed sometimes. I don't get much D but tend to feel C quite often. I have been eating lots of fruits in the last couple of weeks to try and remedy this since I can't each most other sources of  fibre. I think this might actually be making it worse. I would really appreciate any dietary advice from anyone. For me I think diet is the key.I am quite confused as I have been given a lot of contradictory advice. My doctor isn't much help This newsgroup has provided a wealth of information.  It's nice to know that there are people out there who understand (my doctor certainly doesn't !). Thanks Funmi

Funmi;     I highly recommend that you read the book Breaking The Vicious Cycle by Elaine Gottschall.  I too have UC and followed my doctors advice that I can eat whatever I wanted.  I always felt bad.  I discovered that following the diet in the book,  I feel much better.  Some people that have followed the diet for years swear that it cured them.  I unfortunately am not at that point yet...   But I must warn you, the diet is a little strict but once you get use to it, it's not bad. Give it a try. Ted

funmi welcome to our family you are on a very small amount of asacol...i am on 9-12 a day..6 is maintenance...so you might be on more later if your doctor is NOT helping you with this..get someone else... as for diet? its sooooooo individualistic...totally depends on the person.. my first gi had me keep track of what i ate normally for about a month..chart it..and what happened..thats how we really could eliminate (no pun intended..ok..yeah..pun intended <g)  some stuff..like milk and ice cream and red meat usually and unfortunately a lot of fruits and veggies...and nice things.. but if you chart your food and drink it will help a lot.. the other thing..when i was dx'd they sent the hospital nutrtionist/diet person to work with me too...that really gave me at least some ideas of where to start...your doctor should refer you to someone for that...or should be able to do it him/her self take it easy...there is a lot to do ...and a lot you can do...just be sure that no matter how horrid you are feeling...no matter the symptoms..drink a lot of fluids...water...herbal tea if caffein isnt your thing...applejuice and cranberry juice helped me a lot..but keep drinking..you can get in some big trouble if you get dehydrated...ok? take care and let us know how you are doing... love annie

I don't think I ever noticed anyone saying that cold drinks or food causes pain,   Anything cold gives me pain,  on the left side or right side as many people mention.  So water is kept in a pitcher at all times at room temperature, even fruit has to be room temp or warmed in the microwave.  Just in case it has not been thought of, it is a suggestion. Hi  Ted,       I absolutely agree with you.  I started the SCD diet last week and  as much as I didnt want it to work.  IT DOES.  maybe not for everyone  but I think EVERYONE should at least try it and see if its right for them.  Its kind of like the lottery.  You gotta be in it to win it. I dont feel deprived (yet) as  I thought I would.   Having no stomach aches and not dealing with the daily constipation keeps me going one day at a time.  Now that I got this part under control.........Is there another diet to get rid of my joint pains????????
